Health and Arts Research Centre Inc.®

Health and Arts Research Centre, Inc. (HARC) is a not for profit, non governmental organisation whose purpose is to research, publish, train, create employment for local artists and cultural workers, and further advance the synergy between arts, culture and wellbeing.

HARC was founded in 1999 by Marily Cintra


with the purpose of:


  1. Provide a professional approach to public art in healthcare facilities.

  2. Use a process of placemaking, involving staff, clients and related communities in the design, implementation and evaluation of public art programs in health care facilities.

  3. Provide informed services that acknowledge the multidisciplinary nature of art in health based on current research Promote opportunities for cultural development and wellbeing.

  4. Promote opportunities for critical debate in the intersection of arts, culture, design and health.

  5. Provide opportunities for training and professional development of artists and arts managers working in health.

  6. Contribute to the development of a body of research that explores the synergy between arts and health.

  7. Support the promotion of health through arts and cultural activities that are connected to local communities.


Our team:


Marily Cintra, MDes Founder and executive director


Marily Cintra is an artist who works in social contexts since 1966.  She is the founder and director of Identity, Environment & Art, an arts organisation with focus on community participation in the design of public places.  In 1997 Identity won the Australia Council for the Arts award “Community, Environment, Art and Design” for their work at Liverpool Hospital, “ a model of innovation and creative place-making”. In 1998 Marily won the New South Wales Women and the Arts Fellowship for her work in arts and health.


She has a Master of Design (University of South Australia, 2000) with thesis focused on Post Occupancy Evaluation of Public Art Programs in healthcare facilities.  She is at the moment a candidate for a Master Degree in Sustainable Cultural Heritage, Australian National University.  She is also a candidate for a PHD University of Queensland.


Marily is an accomplished artist, winner of various awards for her work and represented in many international public and private collections.  Until 1995 Marily participated in more than 60 exhibitions including at the Victoria National Gallery (Bias Binding), Canberra Contemporary Art Space (1992, solo) and International Biennial of Ceramic, Vallouris, France (11th, 12th and 14th Biennials).


Marily coordinated the public art and cultural planning for 18 health care facilities in Australia: Royal Newcastle Centre, Henry Fulton Nursing Home, Lemongrove Gardens Hostel, Wyong Mental Health Centre, Gosford Hospital, Wyong Hospital, Nepean Hospital, John Hunter Hospital, Camden Hospital, Campbelltown Hospital, Fairfield Fairfield Hospital, Corella Lodge Detoxification Unit, Braeside Hospital, Bankstown Hospital, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Liverpool Hospital and Canberra Hospital.  She implemented the plans in 11 health care facilities of which 10 have continued with on going programs.


Marily has coordinated hundreds of art commissions for healthcare facilities.  She applied Post Occupancy Evaluations of Public Art Programs in Liverpool, Fairfield and John Hunter Hospitals.  All evaluations showed great support and appreciation for the public art programs, resulting in further development of the on going programs.


All arts and cultural plans included arts collections documentation and policies. The arts collection policy developed for the Sydney Children’s Hospital was endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office as Deductible Gift Recipient.


Marily presented her work in numerous international conferences. She lectured Arts in Health and Community at the University of Newcastle, School of Fine Arts during 2002 and 2004.  She has presented her work as invited lecturer at the School of Design, Montreal University, Australian National University, University of New South Wales, University of Technology, Sydney and University of Newcastle.


Marily is fluent in Portuguese, English, Spanish and Norwegian


Malcolm Cooke, HARC treasurer and artist


Malcolm has a Diploma in Fine Arts, Major Ceramics (1970, Bendigo Institute of Technology).  He trained at Bendigo Pottery and has 36 years experience as ceramic artist and manager of ceramic studios.  He is represented in various national and international collections including the Queen Victoria Museum, Lauceston, Tasmania, Castlemaine Art Gallery, Australia and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei, Taiwan.


He has been commissioned many public art works and provided technical support for numerous community art projects.  Most recently he designed the artworks for lift lobbies and lift interiors of the Royal Newcastle Centre for the Hunter New England Area Health Service (image on glass, 2005), Liverpool Mental Health Centre, main entry (image on glass, 2006), Pialla Mental Health Unit, Nepean Hospital, patient’s courtyard (water feature, seats and pavement work (2005)


Malcolm has managed Cuppacumbalong Pottery for over 10 years and since 1992 he is the director of The Art Shed, a pottery studio and gallery at Tharwa in the ACT.


Martha Fernandez, board member, community artist


Martha coordinates Fairfield Hospital Arts for Health Program.  She works with Marily Cintra since 1996 as community artist and assisting in the management of arts programs in Sydney South West Area Health Service.  Martha is an artist who has worked with people of diverse cultural backgrounds and people with disabilities since 1993.  She has also lectured Business Opportunity and Marketing Strategies at various TAFE Institutes in South Western Sydney.


Martha is fluent in English, Spanish and Italian.
